Istana Nurul Iman

Istana Nurul Iman was included in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest living residence of a state head. Indeed, it is the biggest palace and royal residence of the world. This massive royal dwelling is several times larger than the Palace of Versailles and the Buckingham Palace. The Palace is the house of Brunei’s sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. The palace stands on the banks of the Brunei River, several kilometers south of Brunei’s capital. Istana Nurul Iman is a massive white construction with golden domes and minarets. Breathtaking views of the palace open from the nearby Persiaran Damuan Park. Curved roofs of the buildings and the huge golden dome of the palace mosque rise over green trees. It is also worth to enjoy the looks of this extravagant palace while taking a boat trip on Brunei River.

Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

Jamer Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque is built in modern mosque architecture style. The roof is decorated with a gold dome made of pure gold. There are two golden domes in total. The large dome is part of the prayer hall. All four corners form a steeply high minarets. From the top of the tower, one can see as far as the location of Brunei Airport. The walls around the minarets are decorated with geometric patterns on different floors. The top apex is made up of four small gold domes. The inner structure and the outer courtyard are all marble and decorated with mosaics. Flower bushes and fountains were also built along the path leading into the inner hall. 29 golden domes stand here to honor the 29th Sultan of Brunei. The mosque’s air-conditioned interiors, spacious enough for up to 4,000 worshippers at a time, use only the finest materials imported from all over the world—Philippine hardwood, Italian marble, Persian carpets, and, of course, real gold. Given its distance from the main city center, it’s best to join an organized tour to visit the Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque. Silence must be observed at all times, shoes must be taken off and robes will be offered for visitors to wear whilst inside the mosque. Visitors are also forbidden to take photographs of people in prayer.
